SOUTHLAND DEFEATED.

Invercargill, Aug. 7. The ground was sodden, buf overhead conditions were perre* for the vSpringboks-iSouthlatid match on Saturday. The Africans put in a strong fifteen, their forwards averaging 14st 81b. The game was largely a forward tussle, with much work in the tight.
In the first spell, Van Heerdcn scored from a passing movement, traversing all the backs, and Meyer scored from a pass from Morkel, following a solo run on the wing.
From a line-out in the second .-.pell the Southland forwards, by loose rushes, troubled the visitors, but they could not penetrate the defence. Morkel scored at the end of a passing attack from the nick, and Van Ileerden fell over at the corner from a similar movement from the line-out. Do Villiers failed in all his kicks. The Southland backs were outplayed and outclassed. The forwards more than held their own in the loose, but were overpowered in the tight work. The game ended: Springboks 12, Southland nil. Mr R. McKenzie was referee.

The gross takings at- Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on the occasion of the Rugby football match, Canterbury v. Springboks, were £1,565 13,s (Id. The Lancaster Park Board of Control will receive £306 17s Bd, and the New Zealand Rugby Union’s share will be £1,277 10s lOd, subject. to the payment of certain expenses.
It- was stated in Timaru that Bade ley cannot get the necessary time to undergo a week’s training in Dunedin, and that Roberts will play in the New Zealand team in his place.
WEBABOA BEATS SHANNON
A good deal of interest was attached to the junior game between Weraroa and Shannon on Saturday, the game being played on the latter’s ground. A well-contested game resulted in Weraroa winning by 11 points to 0.
Canterbury defeated Wanganui reps., at Wanganui on Saturday, by 21 points to nil.
The Horowhenua and Manawatu representative team-- met at Palmerston on Saturday. The game resulted in a draw. 3 points each. Broughton crossed the line for Horowhenua, and Boeder for Monawarn.
