A RAILWAY “CUT.”

HIGH EXPENDITURE AND DECLINING TRAFFIC.

BOTH ISLANDS AFFECTED,

A somewhat drastic “cut” in the branch line and suburban railwayservices of the Dominion was announced yesterday by the Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Acting-Minister for Railways). The “cut” is to commence on August 14th, and to last till the end of November next, unless meanwhile there is a great improvement in the traffic.

In view of ihe high rate of expenditure, and the fact that the railway' traffic, which has been declining since April Ist, gives no sign of materially improving, it has been decided (states the Minister) that a curtailment in the train services has become a matter of necessity.

The mid-day trains between Palmerston North and Foxton will he reduced to two days per week.
