H was recently slated that some fore-and-aft schooners were built by Mr Hartley at Hartley’s Bend in the early days, and traded in and out of Foxlon. Mr John Kebbell, whose father settled on the Mannum tu River as long ago as 1841, says this is not quite correc.l. The shipbuilding was carried out by Mr G. Nye, just opposite the Kebbell homestead below the Ilaumiaroa reach, a long straight stretch of water, and he believes the Emerald and Mary Jane were both built there. Mr Kebbell has in his possession a very interesting survey map of the river in those days, showing the sections abutting on to it, and bearing evidence by comparison of the manner in which the Manawatu has diverged from its old-time course.
