WHITEBAIT REGULATIONS.
Constable Owen, local fisheries inspector, has forwarded as the following gazetted regulations as to taking whitebait in the Manawatu River and its tributaries, which ■ hould be carefully perused by local ishermen: — “Set-nets having an opening of -iot more than 9 ft. by 1 ft. may be used for the taking of whitebait in he Manawatu River and its tributaries. “No person shall use more than .no set-net, or use a set-net and hand-net at the same time, or place j ,i set-net or use any fishing-net within a distance of 2 chain- from mother net on the said river and its tributaries.
“Any person committing a breach if the foregoing regulation- -hall be liable to a penalty of not less Imn £1 and not exceeding £2O, except where otherwise specially provided.
“No per.-on shall use, for the purpose of enabling him to take whitebait, hurdles ( either alone or in conjunction with boats moored or held ii position in a river or stream), jiggers, or any other device or contrivance which tends to prevent or livert the movement of such fish up .r down stream. A jigger is an appliance formed of piece- of metal »v other substance attached to a. ine, and placed in a river or stream for the purpose .of turning the fish nto nets.
“Any person committing a breach if ihe foregoing regulation is liable ~ a line of not less than £1 and not. -xceeding £20."
