FOOTBALL BETTING.
IT was reported.to a meeting of the Ilorowhenna Rugby Referees' Association that referees were betting on the result of football matches under the union’s jurisdiction, and it was decided to expel any such member proved guilty of tins misdemeanour. It was also decided to draw the attention of the union to the amount of betting that goes on on matches throughout the union, asi the association was of opinion that this was’ the cause .of most of the ill-feeling displayed towards referees dui'ing the progress and after the games. Unfortunately, it is impossible to prevent gambling iu the realm, of sport, by a certain class whose morality is of a low standard, and it is just this sort of thing that sickens numbers of enthusiasts, and kills true sport. It', as alleged, officials who control the game are guilty of this practice, tire Union should leave no stone unturned to oust them. No honourable player would indulge in football other than for the game itself. Gambling is at (he bottom of brutality and “stinting,” and those guilty''of such practices should he debarred from the playing lield.
