THE local Patriotic Society funds amount to about £3,000. I hi* i* ti> c balance of the funds raised by the public for the benefit of sick and wounded soldiers, aud the relief of their dependant*. The fund is administered by a committee elected annually by the public, and upon which special provision is*made for the representation of returned soldiers. Every application for relief and assistance from those for whom the public subscribed the fund is carefully considered on its merits, without publicity and obnoxiouj personal inquisition, which at, one period was alleged, rightly or wrongly, against the {Society, and every applicant gets a sympathetic hearing and a fair deal. Ihe Secretary, himself a returned soldier, and upon whom the lion share of the work falls, is eminently qualified to fill the position, and returned men can approach him -with confidence without being subjected to brusque questioning of the “stand and deliver” order. Under these circumstances the public can rest assured that the fund, which is gradually diminishing, i* being expended to the very best advantage, and in accordance with the objects fox’ which it was raised.
