A STAGNANT PORT.

AT present there is no immediate prospect of shipping to the local part, and all produce and merchandise to and from the district is carried by rail. The Kennedy has only made two trips to the-port during the past eight months —the only vessel to enter, and on one of these trips went ashore and suffered damage to the extent of half her value. We are informed that it is unlikely she will visit the port again. An attempt is being made to form a company to purchase a suitable vessel to trade with the port, but owing to the general depression is not meeting with much success. There is sufficient freight offering to keep two or three vessels in constant running, and the Harbour Board has done its best to encourage shipping, and has expended a considerable sum of money in providing a dredge to keep the channel clear, but for some reason unexplainable no ships are offering.. The stagnation of the port will cripple the Board’s finances, and unless things improve within the next three months, the Board will be up against a crisis.
