THE NEW GAME.
Met an old friend in a bar, “Have you seen Arthur?” he said: “Arthur who?” I asked. “Arthurmometer,” he sniggered. I shrugged. He called for a Scotch. “Do you like Esther?” he said. “Esther who?” I queried, “Esther stuff.*to give ’em,” he chortled, tossing off his glass. Both chestnuts, I decided to invent something new. I looked him straight in the eyes. “Do you know Adam?” I asked. He shook his head. “Adam who?” he said... “Adam mind if I do,” I said. The drinks were on him. Good drinks, but my thirst wasn’t slaked, so I said: “Do you know Nellie?” He was very good about it. “Nellie who?” he said. “Nellie’l drink won’t do us any harm.” The barman got busy again. But I had still to complete my revenge. Our glasses were empty. “Do yq.u know Oliver?” said I. • “Oliver who?” he groaned. “Oliver ’nother,” I said, I had another. He paid again.
