FOOTBALL.

MANAWATU (3) v. HOROWHE-

NUA (0).

Tlie first rep. match of the season was played at Shannon on Saturday, between the Manawatu and Horowhenua teams, the former wins j ning by 3 points to nil.. L. McDonald and Ferguson (of the threequarter line) and Tahiwi (fiveeighth) were absent from Horowhenua, and their places were filled by Johnson and Burgess (three-quart-ers) and Kelly (five-eighth). 11. Jacob, the Horowhenua wing-for-ward, was also absent as the result of a recent injury. Stratford took his place as wing, and Campion filled the vacancy in the scrum.

The game, opened with the Horowhenua (red) forwards making an excursion into Manawatu (green) ground, and the hall went over the line and a force resulted. Once in their stride, the Greens began to form matters, and shifted play to beyond the half-way, where Cnrroil, Dustin and Darkness carried on to the Horowhenua twenty-five. The game was principally among the forwards, of which the Greens had the best. The Red hacks at this stage were kicking to the touchline instead of using the wind and giving their support to their forwards. A solo effort by Glendin-r-.ing shifted play further into Red ground, where ' Burgess got in a lucky kick and saved. The Green forwards maintained the offensive, and swept up the ground again, and trouble nearly occurred through one of the Red hacks missing, hut T. McDonald got in and sa/ed. A penalty kick at goal by Manawatu had no result. Sands smartly stayed another onslaught on the Red line. The Greens could not he held off, and Ilarkness and Sly broke through, and the latter scored. No goal resulted, and the spell ended with Manawatu leading hv 3 —o. On resuming, the Greens forced the play, hut this lime the Reds carried the play to the opposition, and made the pace throughout the spell. R. Moynihan led a fine forward rush, which nearly ended in a score, and the Greens forced. Burgess and Marshall were prominent among tho Red hacks, and McDonald was sending the hall out in good style, hut the hacks generally ran straight across the field. T. Moynihan made a good hreak-away, and was only pushed out in the Manawatu corner. A free kick lo Reds gave Kelly a shot at goal, without result. Beyan and Campion were conspicuous in good forward work, which, however, was nullified by Dustin, who reliev? od to the Red quarter flag. The bes(. passing of the day among the Horowhenua hacks now look place. Baker, McDonald, Johuson'and Bur-

gess handling. Towards the end of die game, the Greens took the offensive, and things looked dangerous for Horowhenua. Off-side play by the Greens relieved, and good forward work by the Reds moved play to the twenty-five flag, where final whistle sounded. Mr T. Fa rata refereed.
