THE NEW RULES.
The following is a brief summary of the new rules: — After an unconverted try the ball is kicked off at half-way in the same manner as if a goal had been scored.
A fair catch can be claimed by catling out “mark” after the ball has been caught. A free-kick awarded by way of penalty cannot be charged. AH scrimmages ordered between the twenty-five lines must be taken ten yards from the touch-line. The player who is awarded a mark must take the kick himself.
If the ball is not put immediately into the scrummage on its being formed, a free-kick shall be given against the player breaking the rule. It is illegal for one player to charge another at the line-out —i.e., a player cannot stand back a few yards from the line-out and charge an opponent at the spot where the ball is- landing. A free kick should be given against him for so doing. The advantage rule shall apply in all infringements. A knock-on cannot be recovered.
Touch judges assisting at kicks at goal shall not signal with their flags after the kick, nor shall the referee signal when the ball lias been placed on the gi’ound. In reply to a query from the Horowhenua Rugby Union, the New Zealand Union has replied as follows: “There is nothing to prevent a player taking a place kick at goal fr?>m giving fresh directions or tout-, ching the ball, provided the ball has not been placed on the ground.
MEETING OF UNION
A meeting of the Management Committee of the Horowhenua Rugby Union was held at Ohau last night. Present: Messrs J. AN. Procter (chairman), R. Ford, F. I). Whibley, R. George, 11. Rowlands, and AY, Weheipehana (secretary).
A letter was read from the Referee-' Association, complaining of the behaviour of a coach at a recent match. —It was decided to write to the offender, and caution him,
The Manawatu Rugby Union wrote, advising that the manager of the rep. team to play at Shannon next Saturday would like a conference with the Horowhenua Management Committee to discuss the question of an alteration in the boundaries of the Manawatu and Horowhenua. Unions. —It was decided to meet the manager, hut the meeting was unanimously against any alteration in the boundaries!
Mr J. Desmond was appointed lc act with a selector appointed by tlui Manawatu Union to select the combined Horowhenua-Manawatn team to play the South African fifteen at Palmerston North in September. D. Cole (Weraroa) made a further application to bo reinstated as a junior.—lt was pointed out that the player in question could not get a game in any senior team, and the application was therefore granted.
The Oroua Sub-Union wrote asking for a match at Palmerston N.—II was decided to reply stating that Horowhenua would be pleased to meet Oroua at Levin on July 27th. The Kuku Club forwarded an appeal to the New Zealand Rugby Union against the Horowhenua Union's decision in their protest against Shannon. —It was decided to get a statement from the referee, and the appeal will be forwarded on to Wellington after the next meeting of the Committee.
Mr H. Rowlands was appointed manager of the Horowhenua team to play Manawatu at Shannon next Satimlav.
Owing to the withdrawal of one of the fourth grade teams and two others entering the competition, it was decided to cancel the matches already played, and re-commence the competition as from to-day’s matches,
