Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, JUNE 16, 1921. EASTON PARK.

THE Borough Council decided at last, meeting to confer with the Beautifying Society re tlie playing of football on Easton Park, and to ascertain what effect this would have on llie proposed lay-out 0.l this reserve. In passing, it may be mentioned that the Beautifying Society has no jurisdiction over any of the public reserves, ii came into existence with the sole object of assisting the governing authority to beautify and adorn the reserves, and to arouse public interest in a. town-beautifying scheme. The Council alone has the power to sav whether football "or any other game shall he played there, provided that its decision is in accordance with general public approval. It cannot he denied that there are other grounds for the playing of Kugby within the borough, so that if the Council refused the use of Easton Park for (his purpose no hardship would be inflicted, except from a revenue-producing point of view, as a percentage of the gate proceeds would be used to carry out further improvements on the reserve. Until the Council definitely decides this point it is useless to ask an expert to provide a plan or lay-out, and the Society's operations, except for the planting of shelter trees and levelling, will be at a standstill, so far as this park is concerned, If the lay-out of the park will be prejudiced by a clear space of J(it) yards by 100 yards for a football ground, and for other athletic games, then it should lie definitely stated, in order that some other scheme may be considered. The cost of lilunling and maintaining Easton Park purely as a garden and shrubbery is beyond the present and immediate future financial means of the Council and Society. The suggested conference might result in an arrangement whereby work of a permanent character could he undertaken, and at the same time allow the waste area to Itl* used in the meanwhile for football.
