Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, JUNE 9, 1921. THE PROPORTION OF SEXES

AN interesting feature of the provisional census returns is that they reveal a further movement toward the equalisation of the sexes, in New Zealand, a tendency that has been apparent for some years. In 1911, there were 1,110 males to every 1,000 females. The" census of 1910 showed only 1,007 males to 1,000 females, and according to the Government Statisticians estimate, there was actually a superiority of the female population in the Dominion tit the end of the year, this position arose through the departure of troops on active service. If those abroad on the night of the 191(5 census —including: 345 nurses are taken into account, the proportion was actually .1,084 males to 1,000 females. The reduction of the margin has been hastened by the war’s drain upon the Dominion’s manhood, for the provisional census returns now show only 1,04(5 males to 1,000 females. The proportion is higher in the North Island, being 1,007 males to 1,000 females, as against 1,013 in the South Island. The vital statistics do not confirm the popular expectation that the war losses would be corrected by a preponderance of male babies.
