DOMINION CENSUS
TOTAL POPULATION 1,210,974,
738,071 IN NORTH ISLAND.
The first preliminary count of the census is now complete, and shows that the Dominion has- increased in population since October, 1910, bv 117,525. Much the greater ratio of increase is shown in the North Island, particularly in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts. In 1910 the North Island (including camps, etc.) possessed 59 per cent, of the population, aq against 41 per cent, in the South Island, but the ratio now is 01 per cent, in the North Island, as compared with 39 per cent, in the South Island. It is pointed out by the Government Statistician in a letter in which lie conveys these facts to the Minister for Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. Dowiiie Stewart), that the figures have been compiled from the returns made by (lie local census enumerators, and it follows, therefore, that they are subject to errors in compilation and errors in transmission, etc. The final computation must awail the completion of the checking of the schedules, which will probably-require another six weeks. The following table gives details of tln* preliminary count, Maoris being excluded: —
Males. Females. Total. North I. 381,38 0 3 57.291 738.(571 South I. 240,71(5 237.587 178.303
Totals C22,09(S- 594,878 1,3.1 (>.974 The total increase in the North Isbmdasinee October, 191(5, is given as 87,599, or 13.5 per cent., against 29,92(5, or (5.7 per cent., in tho South Island. Included in the 191(5 figures were 8,724 persons in military and internment camps, all of which were jn tho North Island. The allocation of these (o their respective islands would raise the ratio of increase in the North Island and lower that of the South Island.
