Manawatu Herald SATURDAY JUNE 4, 1921. RAILWAY COMMISSION’S FINDING.
THE finding of the Commission (Messrs W. M. Hammy, -I. Marshbanks, and A. IT. Milos) sot up to inquire regarding the railway facilities at Palmerston X., and the Inking-up of the Main Trunk line between Marlon or Grcatford and Paekakariki, was a foregone eonelusion. The Commission favours the General Manager’s recommendation re the Palmerston X. deviation. In reference to the linking-up of the Main Trunk line between Marton or Great ford and Paekakariki, it will he noticed that the Commission does mat condemn this national work, but says that from the evidence the work was not one which could be expeeted to he undertaken in the immediate future, and in the circumstances does not, consider it desirable, expedient or warranted in the public interest “at present.” That the railway facilities at Palmerston X. need immediate attention no one has denied, bull very strong objection is taken to the construction of a new route to relieve the Palmerston congestion, when for a comparatively little, extra expenditure a work of national importance would serve the purpose and at the same time shorten the distance between Auckland and Wellington, and effect a considerable saving on running expenses. A cute move was by the person responsible for the wording of the order of reference, in that it asked "whether it is desirable and expedient and warranted in and by the public interest that any deviation in the Wellington-New Ply-*
mouth railway should he made between Paekakariki' and Marton or Greatford,” etc. The effect of this was "ostensibly to minimise the importance of the issue to the public outside the Wellington province. The wording of this clause should have been objected to, and amended to read “The linking tip of the Auekland-Wellington Line between Marton or Greatford and Levin.” The Commission, however, has completed its task, and it now awaits the approval of Cabinet or Parliament, We do not think the last
word has been heard, either of the Palmerston local deviation or the linking'up of the Main Trunk line between Marton or Greatford and Levin.
