DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEF.

TE HEUHEU TUKINO, M.L.C

The death of the Hon. Te Heuheu Tukino, M.L.C., occurred in a' private hospital at Auckland on Thursday. He was one of the few chiefs in New Zealand in whom is centred the blue blood strain of all the tribes in New Zealand, and he was the paramount chief of the Ngati-Tu-wharetoa tribe, and of the Arawns. Te Heuheu Tukino was a strong supporter of the Government’s policy during the war, and was one of those instrumental in bringing about the gift to the Crown of the Owhaoka Block, in inland Paten County, for the purpose of settling returned Maori soldiers. During the visit of the present King to New Zealand Te Heuheu led his people at the great display at Rotorua; and during the visit of the Prince of Wales he was active in arranging for his people to take part in the welcome by the Native race. His appointment to the Legislative Council dated from 27th May, 19.18, and from time to time he held the interest of members by the fluency of his speeches, which he always made through a.n interpreter. His home was at Lyall Bay, W ellington, of recent years, but his ancestral homo was at Tokaanu —ii was his father who presented Tongariro National Park to the Crown—-and it is expected that' his body will be taken to Tokaanu for the purpose of holding a tangi suitable to the occasion of the death of such a chief. 1
