WATER AND DRAINAGE.

The work of layiug the main sewer in Johnston Street is proceeding satisfactorily, and pipes have been laid to the junction of the Avenue. Progress has necessarily been somewhat retarded by the steady inflow of soakage water, necessitating closer timbering, considerable difficulty has been encountered in the form of logs lying along the pipe line, one of them being fully four feet in diameter, about eight feet below the surface, on the Site of a manhole. Trenches have now been opened up on the North side of the Avenue to the manhole in Russell Street, which will be the terminus of the nine-inch sewer line in that direction. When (his section is completed a start will be made on t'ie nine-inch seweralong the southern portion of Main Street, as far as the junction.of Cook Street.
