HOROWHENUA RUBGY UNION.
A meeting of the Union was held in Levin on Thursday evening, Mr J. W. Procter presiding. Delegates present were: Messrs F. W hibley, T. Dalzell, R. George, R. Ford, A. Gustofscn and W. Wehipeihana. It was decided to ask Mr M. Winiata to allow himself to be nominated as one of the senior selectors, in place of Mr T. Parata, resigned. The Foxton Borough Council wrote, granting the Union permission to play on the park on a 10 per cent, commission of the gate takings, receipts to be paid over to the Foxton Beautifying Society.—The matter #as left in Mr AY hibley’s hands.
Decided to suggest June 29th or July Gth as suitable dates to piny Bush Union. It was decided to grant permission to clubs in this district to take part in the seven-aside tournament to be held by the Rangitikci Club on June 11th.
The Otauru Club (Shannon) entered a protest against the junior Wanderers playing Melville in the match last Saturday. After discussion, Mr Wehipeihana moved that the player in question be asked io stand down as a junior, and that the match be replayed at a later date at Shannon, the Wanderers to be informed that they cannot play Melville until he is reinstated as a junior.
In accordance with notice of motion, Mr Whibley formally moved that the motion to allow certain junior players to continue as juniors be rescinded in order that the question of classification be opened up again.
There wan no discussion, and on being put the motion was lost, Messrs Procter, Whibley and Ford being the only supporters. The llui Mai juniors claimed the match played with Paraparaumu last Saturday on account of their playing Smith, a Waikanae man. — Match to be replayed, at Manakau, and Smith was granted a transfer from Waikanae to Paraparaumu.
Mr Gustofsen applied on behalf of ihc Shannon Club for permission to retain the gate receipts for one match in order to erect a fence to keep the spectators back. This was agreed to, the gate of t lie first senior match to be used for tHe
purpose
The prortest by the Kuku senior team against Shannon being awarded the match on May 7th on the grounds that the latter club’s try was scored in the dead area, was reconsidered.
Mr Randall, the referee, staled that he gave the try, and as he was not sure of the mark at which the ball was forced, he did not think lie bad grounds for altering bis decision. That was all be had to sav.
The Union, on Mr Whiblcy's motion, decided to uphold the previous decision, and dismissed Kuku s protest. Mr Ford brought up the matter of referees, and said lie noticed that for Saturday’s matches home referees had been appointed for nearly every match. He said that was just the tiling that should be avoided, because it gave the impression of favouritism and consequently dissatisfaction.
Mr Weiliipeilmna slated that from what be could see the referees were absolutely unbiassed. The Chairman said he was very glad the Referees’ Association was formed, and thought it was doing good work.
Mr Wehipdbana considered that if there was any dissatisfaction with the appointment of referees the committee could attend the referees' meetings ami discuss the matter with them. Mr Procter said he Would attend the meeting and inform the referees of what had been said.
