WANGANUI RACES.
STEEPLECHASE WON BY
FOEMAN,
At the Wanganui meeting on Thursday, the Steeplechase, of 750 sovs., three miles, was won by the locally trained Foeman. Describing the race, The Times’ sporting writer says:— The Steeplechase was one of the finest seen on the course, and had it not been for the regrettable accident to Slowcoach it is hard to say what the result would have been. The big jumping event drew a field of U-n good fencers, and, excepting the mishap at the fence, live furlongs from home, the whole half-score gave a faultless exhibition of clearing country. The imported Slowcoach assumed command after the lirst round, and well in the last lap looked to have a second-to-none (dvaiiee, when lie hit a fence and came down heavily. Mattock also ~nine down, and for a while it looked as though Luke might win, hut over the la.-t hit the I*oxton gelding. Foeman, came very fast, and, jumping with the perfection for which the son of Advance is noted, lie eventually won well by .-eieial lengths. The Wellington-owned Coalition, whose rider lost a leather, was second, and just ahead of Luke. Foeman was ridden by the Treiitham horseman, H. MeSweeney, who usually lias had the mount on Coalition. Slowcoach badly injured his shoulder when lie fell, find afterwards was shot. Mr Alt'. Wright received many congratulations upon his win.
