Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, MAY 19, 1921. BOROUGH CLEAN-UP.
THE Sanitation Committee of the Borough Council submitted 1 lie following recommendation at last meeting, which wen. 1 adopted: — “(a) That a clean-up of rubbish be carried out. The matter of arranging the date of the clean up to be left to the committee to act in conjunction with the borough overseer and the inspector of nuisances. (b) That no charge be made. The Mayor said the cost of the previous clean-up was t‘2.1." The difference between Levin’s annual “clean-up" and free removal and the local Borough Council’s optional removal system of rubbish at a small charge is very marked, and discloses the weakness and failure of the local scheme. A day should be fixed for a general clean-up throughout the borough by the Council, and householders notified that till rubbish would be removed gratis. This method, if adopted, would leave no loophole for excuse on the part of householders, and would set an example of cleanliness that would not oilly have a good effect, but would he in the best interests of the health of the community. Further, it would strengthen the hands of the health inspector in subsequently dealing with filth-mongers. The small sum involved would be money well spent.
