Accounts amounting to £1,(537 13s fid were passed for payment at last night’s Council meeting. The number of divorce petitions tiled in New Zealand in 1919 was 075, compared with 260 in 1913.

It was mentioned at the installation of the Mayor of' Pahiatua that the finances of the borough were in such a condition that the council was unable to pay the honorarium of the retiring Mayor.
At the commencement of last night's Council meeting the Mayor extended a hearty welcome to the new Councillors, and also congratulated the old Councillors on their re-election.
The first meeting of the newly-el-ected Council w.is held last night, when the Mayor and till the Councillors were present, and made the statutory declarations, and took their seats.
At last night's Council meeting a. letter was read from Mr Reid, asking the Council to shift the hoarding in the old cemetery to the old council chambers section. It was decided to leave the matter to the Hall Committee with power to act.
Those present til hist night’s Borough Council meeting were: Ilis Worship the Mayor (John Chrystall, Esq.), and Crs. Whible.v, Bryant, Smith, Band, Boss, Marlin, Thompson, Walker and Coley.
At last night's Council meeting the Mayor moved a motion of sympathy with Cr. Coley and family, and Mr H. Coley and family, in their recent bereavement. —The motion was carried in silence,' members standing.
Margaret Cronin, a single woman, aged 23, of Sydonhaui, died under an anaesthetic at Christchurch last week whilst having her teeth extracted by a dentist. The anaesthetic was administered by a medical man.
At last night’s Council mooting Ilis Worship the Mayor (John Chrystall, Esq.) moved that the Minister of Forestry be written to, asking that consideration be given to local unemployed for the planting work, as these men can return home each evening, and would not require camp accommodation.
At last night's Council meeting a letter was read from the Ilorowhenua Bugbv Union, asking for permission to play football on Fusion Park, and to make a charge of Is for admission to all games. Permission was granted, with the stipulation Ilial the Beautifying Society receive 10 per cent, of the gross takings.
Whilst engaged in setting up a saw at Speirs' timber yard on Saturday, Mr B. IJ. I’ogdcn had the misfortune to get a very nasty gash in the wrist, through the saw coining in contact with a running belt. The injury necessitated several stitches being put in, and will incapacitate Mr Fogden for a week or two.
At the annual meeting of members of the Horowhenun Racing Club the balance-sheet showed a credit balance (>f £707 18s 2d. Reports till various borough works will appear in next issue.
At the courthouse this morning, before Mr M. E. Perreau, J.P., Herbert Robinson was charged with drunkennes and vagrancy. On the first charge lie was convicted and discharged, and on the charge of vagrancy he was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. It was intimated that all future cases of vngraney would be dealt with very severelv.
