Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 1921. MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
OX "Wednesday next the electors of Fox ton will he called upon to select nine councillors from twelve candidates offering', to administer the affairs of the borough for the ensuing two years —the most important period in the history of the Council. A considerable sum of money is to he expended on the water and sewerage scheme, and although tin- Council will have the guidance of expert engineers, many matters will crop up which will require careful consideration by the city fathers. Apart from this extraordinary expenditure, careful oversight will be required in connection with the gas works and general maintenance work. It behoves ratepayers to make a wise selection from the candidates offering. The re-eleteion of the Mayor was a wise step, for he possesses a full knowledge of the works t,o be undertaken, and can be relied upon to carefully watch the expenditure. In this connection there is no doubt that the ratepayers will not pass over such of the old councillors-and colleagues of* the Mayor who have rendered good service in the past., An infusion of new blood in the Council is desirable, and the voters have a varied selection in this connection, including young men who have already rendered public service on other bodies. We are pleased to notice the inclusion of Mr Alex. Ross, who represents one of our most important industries, and wlmsc commercial experience should be invaluable to the Council. Messrs F. S. Moorhou.se. E. 0. Martin. A. X. Smith, F. I). Whihley and Hamer represent the “young blood." Several of I hose have already rendered excellent service as members of lhe Chamber of Commerce, and possess initiative, and their ‘qualifications should be carefully scanned. They are all business men, and are worthy of support, and encouragement. They are to be commended for iheir public-spirited action in. offering their services, and we wish them success in their initial entry into local public life.
