FIRE AT PALMERSTON N.

NARROW' ESCAPES. Palmerston N., April 21. A disastrous lire occurred tonight in the Piccadilly tea rooms, over Ilalleiisleins’ Buildings, The Square. The proprietor, .1. W. Heard, and his wife and son, who lived on the premises, had a narrow escape, the three jumping from upstairs windows. The firemeii had a trying experience. Several were overcome by smoke. lialleustein’s also suffered considerable damage, principally by water. The fire is believed lo have been caused by a candle left in the bathroom. SCHOOL BUILDING DESTROYED ■ Hokitika, Yesterday. The public school at Kanieri was totally destroyed by lire early this morning’. The cause is unknown.
