BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
A well-attended meeting of the local Beautifying Society was held yesterday afternoon, presided over by the president (Mr M. Perroau). Owing to the unavoidable absence of the Chairman and Secretary of I lie Carnival Committee, Ihe bal-ance-,sheet of the recent Carnival was not presented, but the treasurer, Mr Trueman, stated that a cheque for the net takings had been handed over to the Society. There were a few outstanding accounts in connection with the effort which were passed for payment. The representative of a firm of nurserymen wailed upon the meeting and tendered advice re the purchasing of trees and shrubs, and planting. The Treasurer presented the annual balance-sheet, showing receipts and ixpendiliire up to March 31st. It was decided to draw up a policy of works to he undertaken, and a subcommittee was appointed to submit proposals in this connection to a later meeting. Mrs F. Robinson called attention to the necessity for improving the old cemetery, which at present is in a sadly neglected state. The site was a commanding position, and was at present in marked contrast to the well-kept main thoroughfare. She hoped I hat this would he one of the first works undertaken. —The Town Clerk stated that the transfer of the property to the Borough Council was completed, save for one signature. The general opinion was that work of a permanent character -hould be done there. —If was resolved to adjourn the meeting until Friday evening next, at 7.30, and combine such meeting with the annual meeting. Mr Perreau was authorised to employ casual labour lo grub weeds, etc., in Easton Park. After discussing several minor matters the meeting rose.
