CRICKET
THE FIRST TEST MATCH
The first test match between the visiting Australian team and the New Zealand representatives was commenced at Wellington on Saturday, and continued yesterday. The first day’s play was marred by heavy showers in the late a Iternoon, but yesterday the weather conditions were ideal, and the wicket in perfect order. The Australians scored 134 runs at a cost of 4 wickets on the opening day, and brought, their total up to 273 before the last man was dismissed 'yesterday. Of the Australian team A. E. Liddicut put up the best performance, compiling 83 runs, A. W. Lampard 53, and E. L. Waddy 48. The New Zealand captain, AY. S. Brice, was the mainstay of his side, securing no fewer than 7 pickets for 80 runs. The New Zealanders went in to bat at 3.20 yesterday, but made a poor commencement against the bowling of Hornibroolc and Ironmonger, and the score stood at 129 for the loss of six wickets when stumps were drawn for the day. J. Shepherd, 45 not out, played exceptionally well.
