CARNIVAL COMMITTEE
Mr Moorehouse presided over a well-attended meeting of the Carnival Committee on Thursday afternoon. He explained that the object of the meeting was to decide the robing of the queen and maids of honour. He said many suggestions had been made in this connection. One was that each queen committee should be given a grant of a definijß sum for a dress. The other wa? that the dresses for the occasion should be hired for the occasion, as was done elsewhere. He added that a local firm had offered to make the dresses for six pounds each. After the matter had been fairly well discussed, Mr Hornblow moved that the dresses be hired for the occasion, and that each queen candidate bo given a memento of the occasion. An amendment that quotations for making the dresses be obtained was lost. A Robing Committee of ladies to consist of representatives from each queen committee was appointed to act in conjunction with the organiser in hiring and selecting the dresses, etc., Mrs Green to be chairwoman.
It was resolved to guarantee the Sports Committee £3O for prize money. Mr Fume submitted a programme of events for the day. In reply to Mr Perreau (president of the Beautifying Society), the Chairman explained that the Carnival Committee was acting independent of the Beautifying Society in reference to the Carnival. An organiser had been appointed, and his duties were well defined. Each queen committee had its own secretary and treasurer, and adopted its own method of raising funds under the supervision of the organiser. All money raised and expenditure was submitted in a statement to the treasurer, Air Trueman. A finance committee had been 'appointed to deal with all matters of finance in connection with the Carnival, and would present a statement disclosing the total amount raised, and when the Carnival was completed would, on behalf of the Committee, hand over a cheque to the Beautifying Society of the net sum for beautifying purposes. The affair was splendidly organised, and there was no need to fear any misfeasance. All the sub-committees were working enthusiastically and harmoniously, and judging by present results the Carnival was going to be a great financial success. A. vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the meeting.
