ROAD MAKING SCHEME

Mr A. Seifert forwarded a letter to the last meeting of the Horowhomin County Council on behalf of Messrs Bell, Akers and himself, with reference to the formation of a road from Makerua railway station to the Tane bridge. The letter stated that the writers had agreed lo form a road without the assistance of a loan from the Council. In a few weeks they would have horses and plant available for the work, and a gang of reliable men would lie obtainable. They intended to put down the road formation at their own expense, and finish off the top, and when the whole had settled they would' endeavour to

raise a loan over their properties. They would then be in a position to build bridges and gravel the road. The loan, it was hoped, could lie raised through the Council. They inquired what class of road would be desired.

The engineer (Mr Anderson) submitted a report which stated that the levels of the road would require to be taken and the plans approved by Council before the work could be begun. This was neces- ' sary because if the road was improperly formed the work would have to be gone over again before the Council could take over control. It was belter that the work should be done outright without the additional expense of repatehing and altering. The formation width would be ,18mt., with a six-inch camber. Where the road was likely to be a main road 20 yards of gravel per chain would be necessary, and on side roads 10 yards per chain. A 12-inch covering of clay would be required in places where there was peat. Any bridges constructed would have to lie capable of carrying' a 15-Ton roller. The chairman remarked that tlnlet lor said nothing about the Tane bridge. Cr. llarkncs.x said they could put a toll gate there if necessary. The chairman said he was doubtful of the position, since the bridge would be a private one. The engineer, replying to a ques-i lion, staled that a clay cover over peal ground would make a sati>factory road formation. The letter was received.
