Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, MARCH 12, 1921. THE PORT AND RAILWAY COMMISSION.
HIVING evidence before the Railway Commission at Palmerston X. Hie Chairman of the Foxton Harbour Board, who is also chairman of the Kairanya County Council —a county which surrounds Palmerston borough—said that both bodies were against the Cevin-Ureaiford deviation, although the Harbour Board was not unanimous, one mcmbei —the Mayor of Levin —-mpporting it. The Chairman said further that the Harbour Board was not. affected by either sdieine. If that is the case, then there was no necessity for tendering- evidence mi behalf of the Board, instead of which it was made to appear that only one member of the Board favoured the Levin-Great ford scheme! As a matter of fact, the late Chairman of the Board (.the late Mr Hennessy) was a strong advocate of the scheme, and we have no hesitation in statins;' that had he been alive he would have -pokon sirongly again.-1 the Palmerston deviation, and in favour of the Levin-Great-I'ord connectiug link a- a work of national importance. The Board Chairman is also in error in slat am that only one Board member favoured the Levin-Great ford deviation. This statement will no doubt be cleared up before the evidence is closed. It is self-evident that the Lcvin-Grent ford deviation would be in the best interests of the port, and would facilitate the despatch of goods.
