So badly is the British Empire hit by (lie “eighth plague" that once fell on the proud Egyptiana, that systematic attempts to rid the countries affected are being continued on the most scientific lines, according to a report of the Imperial Institute. Among the ways of getting rid oi: the great swarms of locusts that occasionally sweep over the land, the following have been tried: — Trapping the insects and crushing them; making a big drive of the “hoppers,” and burning them; spraying them with poison; inoculating swarms with bacteria and fungoid diseases. Many other methods have been used, but millions of pounds arc still lost annually to planters in various parts of the Empire. It has been proved that locust eggs sealed in tins will hatch out years afterwards.
