CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual general nfeeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in the Town Hall supper-room last night. Mr J. M. Barr (president) occupied the chair, and there wa£ a good'attendance £>f members. Several apologies were received for absence. The resignations of Messrs Murphy and Cowley were received and accepted. The President read the annual report, which was as follows: — .

“Your Committee have pleasure in submitting their report of the past 12 months’ efforts. It will be seen that much has been attempted, and a fair measure of success lias been attained. The Chamber of Commerce has justified its existence, and will continue to exercise its influence to promote the welfare of tlie tgwn and district of Foxton. Some of the more important matters dealt with during the year were: — Local railway time-table, Foxton-Prtlmferston North: Your Committee’s efforts proved successful in having the time-table re-ar-ranged, much to the convenience of travellers from this end. Proposed .suburban railway area (Palmerston North): Strong objections to this proposal were raised by this Chamber and other local bodies outside of the proposed area, and as a result the matter was placed before the Prime Minister. The proposal has since been dropped. Le-vin-Greatford- railway: This matter is being very ably handled by the Levin - Great ford League, this Chamber being represented by three members, who have reported progress from time to time. Sunday telephone service: Your Committee was successful in having the service extended to oire hour on- Sunday mornings, and one hour on Sunday evenings, and this is now much appreciated. Erection of wooden buildings in brick area by Railway Department: Representation to the Department (from (bis Chamber objecting to this was successful. Goatsrue and sand drifts: Your Committee has done all in its power to have those” two very important matters dealt with, but so far with little success. Ollier matters dealt with during the year included fishing, industry, water and drainage, and beach improvements. Delegates from this Chamber attended the conferences of the Central Chamber at Wellington during March and November. During the year we had a visit from the member for this district, and as a result we are much indebted to him for the valuable assistance and support lie lias given to most matters in which wo have been successful. Our thanks are also due to Mr Leigh Hunt, of Wellington, who* at his own expense, came from Wellington and gave some interesting lectures to the school children on ‘Scott’s Last Polar Expedition’ and to adults on ‘Town Planning.’ Instructive picture slides were shown at each lecture. The retiring Committee wish to record a vote of thanks and appreciation of their services to Mr Moore, lion, solicitor, Mr Bock, lion, auditor, ‘The Manawatu Herald.’ The membership of (be Chamber now stands ;U 72 fully paid up. Statement of receipts and expenditure to dale, duly audited, showing a credit balance of £5 7s Ld, is appended herewith.” The statement of receipts and expenditure disclosed a credit balance of £5 7s Id. The receipts totalled £45 12s -Id, made up as follows: Credit balance carried forward £5 14s 4d, members’ subscriptions £3B 17s, donation Messrs Levin and Co. £1 Is. Expenditure, £3B Us lOd, made up of secretarial and delegates’ expenses, printing and advertising, donation to Beach Committee, and secretary’s commission on members’ fees, leaving a credit balance of £5 7s.ld.

Iu moving l the ado|jjion of the report and balance-sheet, Mr Christie referred to Mhe excellent work accomplished during the year, and eulogised the services of the president and secretary. Mr Jnu. Ross seconded. The President referred in detail to many of the subjects referred to in the report, and paid a tribute to the secretary.

The report and balance-sheet was adopted. Mr A. N. Smith tendered his resignation as secretary, and his services were acknowledged and ordered to be minuted. Mr Roore was unanimously elected to till the vacancy. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows:—President, Mr liornbiow; vice-president, Mr A. X. Smith; council, Messrs Admore, Barr, Christie, Furrie, liornbiow, Moorehouse, Perreau, Pearson, Jno. Ross, A. N. Smith, F, D. Wkibley, Rev. Walton, and the Mayor exofficio; treasurer, Mr Moorehouse; auditor, Mr W. Bock; lion, solicitor, Mr R. Moore. Votes of thanks were accorded to all past officers* Mr Hornblow, in taking the chair, thanked member- for the honour conferred, and asked for the hourly co-operation of members during his term of office. The Chamber had accomplished good work iu the past, and there was no limit to its sphere of usefulness for the advancement of the town and district. In this connection they desired to cooperate with the Borough Council and other governing bodies. The Mayor (Mr Chrystall) said the Borough Council had appointed him to give evidence before the Royal Commission on the Palmerston and Levin-Greatford deviation, and he suggested that the Chamber should also appoint a delegate. Mr Hornblow was unanimously appointed to give evidence on behalf of the Chamber. The usual votes of thanks concluded the meeting.
