Manawatu Herald Saturday, February 26 , 1921. AN IDLE PORT.
EXCEPT for two or three trips by tlio ill-fated Omaka, there has no! been any shipping at the loeal port since the stranding of the Kennedy. Produce, merchandise and hemp has been carried by rail at increased freightage, and local stocks have been held back in the hope th.M a vessel could be put on the run between Wellington and Foxton, The prospects in this connection, however, appear to be very indefinite. We are informed that it is not likely that the Kennedy will take up her regular running to Foxton when her overhauling is completed. The reason for this is said to be that the vessel is not suitable, except on certain tides, to work this port. If this is the case, the company cannot be expected to continue a regular service at a loss. A company is being formed to purchase a suitable steamer for the Wellington-Foxton trade, and we hope that the promoters will meet with the success they deserve in this connection. There is sufficient trade between this district and Wellington to keep two vessels in continuous service. The local Harbour Board's dredge is almost ready for work, and will he employed in keeping the river channel clear of obstructions, and so facilitate shipping. By the combined action of the Board and merchants throughout the Board’s district it is hoped that in the near future the port of Foxton will show signs of life and activity.
