A prolonged frost had a curious effect upon the fish in the English Channel, and at Deal a number of dead fish were discovered by boatmen on the beach. They comprised congers, weighing 201 b. and move, besides cod, tope, whiling, sprats and poolings. The larger fish, quite tit for consumption, were sold by (he fishermen, while the smaller fry were thrown back into the sea. Congers are most susceptible to frost, and quite a number were reported lloatiug about in the Channel.
Two men called at a Hat in Berlin carrying a large carpet, which thev said had been ordered bv the tenant of the Hat below, who was not at home. The mistress of the llal agreed to take it in, and told the story at a party which she gave the same evening. One of her guests, being interested in carpets, asked permission to see this one. Ihe guests accordingly unrolled the earpel, and found a well-armed burglar in the middle. They succeeded in holding him until the police arrived and took him in charge.
A tragedy which followed a christening was disclosed at a Lambeth inquest on Robert Cecil Davel, aged ten weeks. The mother stated that the child had been christened at the Erith Parish Church, and was being held by his grandmother, who stumbled over a step and fell, the child’s leg being broken. A doctor, who was called to the church, scut the child to St. Thomas’ Hospital, where death occurred. Dr. Clnircher said that the child was admitted with a fractured thigh, and broncho-pneumonia supervened. The coroner recorded a-verdict of accidental death.
