FOXTON BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

THE' FORTHCOMING CARNIVAL.

A meeting of members of the abovo and those interested in the forthcoming gala day was held in AH Saints’ schoolroom on Thursday night. Mr Moorhou.se was voted to the chair, and expressed pleasure at seeing such a good ai tendance. He said while all were anxious to get to work on the forthcoming effort to raise funds for beautifying purposes, they appeared to he at a kind of deadlock for the want of an organiser. The time was going on, and unless <i definite move was made the Gala Day would have to be abandoned. The report of the recommendations made at a meeting of the various committees was then read, which suggested the appointment of an organiser and other details in connection with an art union and queen candidates.

The minutes of the last meeting of the Beautifying Society were read and confirmed, and it was resolved to adopt the recommendation re the appointment of an organiser, and to offer the position to Mr Reid. The latter, who was in attendance, promised to give the matter favourable consideration,

It was reported that only two queen candidates had been nominated, and it was decided to endeavour to obtain a Maori candidate and a citizens' within the next few days, failing'which to proceed with the two already nominated. The Chairman stressed the necessity for arousing public interest in the Carnival. He said those who had the raising of funds in hand were not acting for self-glorifica-tion, but for the betterment of the town and the future happiness of the residents. They had centrallysituated reserves easy of access, which could be made beautiful and attractive for rest and recreation. It required, money to carry out these improvements, and this would lie forthcoming iC -1 lie public were interested.
