SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the loqai Slate School Committee was held last night. Present; Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Claris (secretary), Alexander, Geo. Coley, A. Stevenson, and Jno. Ross. The head master was also in attendance. Before the business commenced the Chairman moved that a letter of sympathy be forwarded to Mr and Mrs Perreau in their recent bereavement. Correspondence was read from the Board re the appointment: of Miss McKay as sixth assistant. Decided to confirm the appointment. The Board also notified the appointment of Air John L. C. Procter as a pupil teacher. Portion of subsidy was received from the Board, the balance to be forwarded when expenditure on works, etc., were completed, and: vouchers re same sent to the Board. It was pointed out by the Chairman that in order to obtain balance of subsidy from, the Board the Committee would have to arrange for an advance in order to complete payment on works required to he repaid when subsidy was forthcoming. The shelter shods, for which a grant of £l5O was sanctioned by the Department, were being erected by the Board on sites selected by the headmaster. It was resolved to ask the Board to have the heating appara-, (us and lighting installed before the winter sets in. This work has been hung up for several months. The head master was requested to select a suitable site for the erection of a bicycle shelter, and the Chairman to get estimate of cost of same, and submit to further meeting, and to request the Board to pay for same. A number of accounts were passed for payment. Air Claris was authorised to attend to repairs to gate and fence on old residence site. Messrs Stevenson and Coley were appointed visitors for the month. It was resolved to hold the annual school picnic on the Ashhurst Domain on Wednesday, March Plh, and committeemen agreed to collect subscriptions in aid of same, and the Secretary was authorised to communicate with the District Traffic Manager re special train. The head teacher’s report was submitted and adopted, and slated, inter alia, that the school closed las! year with 415 on Ihe roll, and opened this year with a nett roll of 397, with 355 present. The new entries were 9 boys and 10 girls, and withdrawals 19 hoys and 18 girls, these including last year’s St. AH. pupils. This compares closely with 1919-20 records. The 1919 year closed with 409 on the roll, 8 hoys and 15 girls were entered, and 25 boys and 12 girls were withdrawn, leaving a nett opening roll of 380. .The highest attendance for the first week in 1929 was 340, and for 1921 357. The destinations of the ex-St. A . and VI. pupils is as follows: Secondary education (including technical) 13, office employment 2, Post and Telegraph 1, farm and poultry farming 3. shop 1, home duties 4, Slightly over 50 per cent, of the pupils leaving Sis. A T . and VI, proceeded id higher education. Of those gaining the proficiency certificate approximately GO per cent, are proceeding to secondary education. The janitor was commended for ilie thorough manner in which the school was cleaned out during the holidays. A request was made for the erection of a folding screen for infants’ corridor. In connection with the latter requirement it was decided to obtain cost, and ask the Board to pay for same. The head teacher received a communication from the Board commending the school for excellent drawing submitted by the pupils who sat for the proficiency examination at tire end of last year.
