HEMP INDUSTRY.

GRADING RETURNS

The following return showing l lie quantities of hemp, tow and strip-per-slips graded at the ports of the Dominion during the month of January has been issued hv (he Department of Agriculture: Hemp. —The total number of hales graded was 0,250, as compared with 0,243 for the corresponding period of last year, an increase of 7 hales. Tow. — During the month 1,474 hales were graded, as compared with 1,551 for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 77 hales. For the 12 months ended 31st January, 1921, the number of hales graded was .19,314, as compared with 19,597 for the previous 12 months, a decrease of 283 hales.

Stripper-Slips. —192 bales graded, as compared with nil for the same month last year. lor the 12 months ended 31st January, 1921, the number of hales graded was 1,395, as compared with 12 hales for the previous 12 months, an increase of 1,683 bales,

The following arc the details of lhe grading of hemp at the different ports: —

Eighty-three bales were graded fine at Picton, one each were rejected at Auckland and Foxton, and five at Wellington.

The number of bales graded at each port were as follows Auckland 005, Fox ton 1,617, Wellington 2,42-1, Napier ICO, Picton 119, .Blenheim 75, Lyttelton 08, Bluff 753, Dunedin 30. The number of bales in each grade throughout the Dominion was as under, the numbers for the corresponding month of last year being given in parentheses: —Superior 83, line nil (155), good fair .1,403 (1,535), high fair 3,147 (2,858), low fair 1,521 (1,503), common 29 (150), rejected 7 (33); totals, (5,250 (0,243). Six bales at Wellington were condemned. The total in each grades were as follows, the figures for the corresponding month of last year being given in parentheses: —First 320 (548), second 1,114 (8831, third 20 (120), condemned 0 (nil); totals, 1,474- (1,551).
