Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1921. THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
j FOXTQN Borough Council lias fixed Wednesday as Ihe statutory half- ’ holiday. Except for a remark by a Councillor to the yJTecl that it would only be. a matter of time when Saturday would lie the universal half-holiday, there was no further discussion, but the president of the local Retailers’ Association was in attendance to oppose any change from Wednesday to Saturday. It is recognised by local business people that a fair amount of business is done I>v loeal people with Palmerston Units, and to fix Saturday as the local half-holiday would be detrimental to their business interests. It is the correct thing to “support local industry,” and, other tilings being equal, the money should be circulated locally, but wc are of opinion that despite whatever day is fixed for the statutory halfholiday distant fields of shopping will appear green despile the loss to ■our home town. From the local tradesmen’s point of view, however, the mid-week half-holiday, in view of Palmerston's decision to observe Saturday, is a wise one. But the half-holiday question has a much wider application, and it is possible that the majority of townspeople prefer the wpek-eml, and in that case will ultimately fall into line with other centres.
