Miss Hope Maekay has been appointed, subject to the Committee's
approval, sixth assistant at Ihe local Slate school. Miss Maekay completed a full course at the Training College last year, and prior to that was a pupil teacher at the local school.

A fitting and enjoyable conehisi-* on to the l!'2l Science Congress, held at Palmerston, was provided on Saturday by a visii of members and others interested to Messrs A. and L. Seifert's, Ltd., Miranui and Weka I'Tn.vmills, and the Mangahao Hydro-Elec trie Works. Throughout the trip the scientists found plenty to interest them, besides the actual places of activity to which they were taken. Before proceeding on Mangahao the visitors were entertained at luncheon by Mr and Mrs Alfred Seifert. Professor Etisterllchl returned the thanks of the visitors for the hospitality extended. and for the opportunity of gaining :ui insight into the workings of a llaxmill.

A verdict of accidentally drowned was returned. Evidence at the impicst at. Wellington on Saturday on the body of Mr F. Hulse, whose death near Brooklyn took place through the explosion of a benzine tank, .showed that deceased was apparently seeking to know why his ear stopped. He examined various parts and opened the inlet lank and peered in with a lighted match in his left hand. The tank was nearly empty of benzine, but full of a mixture of vapour and air, which exploded and killed Mr Hulse instantaneously. The theory of one witness was that the vacuum,’ feed went wrong. The coroner. Mr Riddell, S.M., commented on deceased's lock of experience. Tie had driven for two months only in eases of emergency. The verdict was that death was due to the'explosion of the benzine tank. UO.VT WORRY. Do not think that the rule that the bowels should move every day must, under no circumstances, be broken. At a special meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council last night, Saturday was decided upon as the statutory half-holiday, subject to a poll of ratepayers.

A warrant has been issued at •Oitmaru for the arrest of T. L. Ralfo, late secretary of the North Otago Soldiers' Aid Association, on a charge of embezzlement. The body of C. G. Smalitield, stock broker and racehorse owner, of Hamilton, who disappeared while bathing on Wednesday, was recovered yesterday from the Waikato river.

The trial aerial Timaru-to-Chrislchurch mail service was inaugurated yesterday. An Avro ’plant? accomplished the journey in lhr. -It) min., arriving at Tiniant at 0.40, after stopping at Ashburton to drop and pick up a bag. The Avro arrived back in Christ''church from Tmnmt at 1.27, thirteen minutes ahead of schedule lime. The actual living time was 05 minutes. The 'plane brought 115 letters from Timaru and 71 from Ashburton.
A team of Wednesday players from the Levin Cricket Club will pay a visit to Foxton to-morrow to play a friendly game against the “Grout Unknowns” of Foxton. The game will commence at 2 p.m., on Victoria Park. The following will represent the “Great Unknowns”: — W. Bullard, R. Burnell. H. Claris, J. Death, L. J. Barrie (ea.pt.), K. Hiring Olingberg, C. The body of George Darrell, the veteran author and acior-mauager, has been washed ashore on the beach near Manly, states a Sydney cable. He left the home of a friend where lie lived on Thursday* night. A note was subsequently found id the room, merely slating that lie had gone on a voyage. Deceased was over 70, and well-known in New Zealand, where lie made his debut as mi actor. We clip the following from the M.D. Times, but do not vouch for its accuracy:—The father’s exam-, pie is not always the best for the son to follow. A little lad four or five years of age was noticed to dash down the wharf at Foxton a few days ago and jump into the water, where he quickly commenced jo drown. Luckily a good swimmer was handy, and soon had the little chap out. “What on earth did you do that for?” asked the rescuer, when he recovered his breath. “Oh/* said the rescued one, “daddy does ii everv morning.”
