CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce was held on Tuesday night. Mr Barr, president, occupied the chair. Correspondence was read from the Borough Council re services of garbage cart, intimating that unless advantage was taken of the service it would he discontinued. The Chairman said the position appeared to be hopeless. The Chamber asked that the borough as a whole should receive attention in this connection. It was resolved that the Chairman confer with Mr Dawick, of the Beach Improvement Committee, re financial assistance towards life-saving reel at the seaside. A letter was read from Mr Ed. Newman, M.P., informing the Chamber that he had written to the Minister objecting to railway cottages being erected in the main thoroughfare. From Borough Council re same. It was pointed out that the Rnihyay authorities had abandoned the idea of erecting cottages on the sites in Main Street objected to.—Mr Newman, M.P., wrote, stating that the Prime Minister would receive a deputation on Monday re the planting of sand dunes along this coast, and asking that the Chamber appoint a representative, —Mr Ilornblow was appointed to represent the Chamber. Re the lecture by Mr Leigh Hunt on Town Planning, the Chairman was deputed to make arrangements re same, and to confer with the Borough Council and Beautifying Society, and enlist their co-operation. The arranging of the details in connection with the lecture to school children was left in the hands of Messrs Furrio and Ilornblow. II was decided to write to the Borough Council and, convey the Chambers appreciation of the transfer of the old cemetery from the Native trustees to the Council. The resignation of Mr Alex. Speirs as a member was received, and several members who were in arrears were deleted from the list. '
