NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. The third annual tournament in connection with the North Island, croquet championship commenced on (he Manawatu Croquet and Bowling- Club’s greens yesterday. The following are the results of the morning's play:— North Island championship (open singles), first round: A. Ross (Christchurch) beat C. A. Watkins (Christchurch), 20 —10, 20 15: Mrs'Fullerton (Auckland) beat Mrs Clarkson (Auckland), 26 —23 (only one game played): B. •!. Boss (Christchurch) beat Miss Whitaker (Levin), 26 —16 (only one game played). Second round: Dr, Whitaker (Palmerston North) beat J. Pollock (Levin), 223,6 —3, 26—0; H. p. Stratton (Hastings) beat Mrs- C. H Richardson (Christchurch), 26—C, 14 —20, 26-0.
