THE OLD CEMETERY.

WE congratulate the Borough Council in at long last having succeeded in securing the control and transfer of the old cemetery at the north end

oi' Main Slreel. This small piece of elevated ground can now be converted into a beauty spot, and the neglected plots put in order. The crest of the hill would be an ideal situalion for a band rotunda, while the sides could he terraced to advantage. The erection of a fence or hedge, and by the planting of suitable shrubs, the reserve could be transformed into a pleasing beauty and rest spot, and add to the attractiveness of the main thoroughfare. We feel sure the public would respond liberally to a fund for such deserving object. The interested Maoris who claim the title to the land the thanks of the community for placing no obstacle in the way of the transfer. It would be a graceful act on the part of the Council to perpetuate the .name of the departed Maori chief who originally set the land apart as a burial ground by naming it Ihakara Park. The Beautifying Society will no doubt include the recently acquired spot in its beautifying scheme.
