Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, JANUARY 8, 1921. ABOLATION OF EDUCATION BOARDS.
THE New Zealand Eduealnmol Institute ill yeslcrda y’s conference reaffirmed the execniiveV. policy that “Hie control of education in each locality should he by local Education Committees, acting under the general direction of a National Education Board," and the resolution was referred to the executive for further details. If this resolution' i> adopted by the Government it would mean the abolition of Education Boards, and the consequent savin# of thousands of pounds annually which could be used to.{••renter advantage in improving' the school environment. The.powers of Boards have been so whittled away that they are now no more than glorified school committees. As a matter of tact, they are a useless, expensive, and time-wasting intermediary between committees and the Department. They are a hindrance rather than a help to local school administration, and an obstacle to local interest. Boards, as we have previously {minted out, are a legacy of the old provincial form of Government, and the sooner they are abolished the better.
