Discussing the Maori ‘‘miracle man,’’ Mr J. \. Garcitch write- to the Wanganui Herald: —It has been proved that suggestion of any kind is very effective in many diseases, such as insomnia, indigestion, lumbago, sciatica, various nervous and functional disorders, muscular (roubles, certain forms of insanity, various forms of hysteria, including certain forms of paralysis which have their origin in hy.-Teria, vicious habits, drink and drug habits, and many otherr troubles that man is heir to. But suggestion cannot cure an organic disease. Suggestion inhibits the pain, and, so to speak, temporarily lulls the symptoms of the disease, hut does not cure the diseased organs. The iaith-healer can pray to his favourite brand of God till lie is blue and black in the face, but he Avill not cure consumption, cancer, or a hollow tooth. Here, then, is where the knowledge of precise diagnosis is required, so as to know whether the disease is organic or functional. The faithhealer has not the necessary knowledge to be able to tell whether the easy is amenable to suggestion or to the surgeon’s knife, while the tva- ■ ined practitioner not only has the means of correctly diagnosing the trouble, but he also lms, with the help of science, the ability to effect a lasting cure.
