CHRISTMAS BRIEFS
SOME TINY TRUTHS. The Order of Ihe Garter was instituted by King Edward the Third, at Windsor* Castle, 134-1, at a Christmas festival. The boar's head was the most distinguished of all Christmas dishes, and was always served up with great pomp and ceremony. The Peace of Ghent was signed on Christinas Eve, 1814, and brought the war between America and England to an end. Icelanders date the beginning of their year from “Yulc/U December 22nd. They also reckon a person’s age by the number of Yules he has seen. Christmas trees were once set up on the pavement outside the houses, and decked with greenery. Later they were brought inside, and the decorations became more elaborate. The first collection of Christmas carols was issued in 1621. Before the war England exported 200 tons of plum pudding every year.
