Manawatu Herald TUESDAY. DECEMBER 21, 1920. TOO MUCH PESSIMISM.

A PROTEST was made at the annual meeting of the Auckland Slock Exchange on Tuesday by two old residents against the growing feeling of. pessimism, says the Star. Mr G. A. Buttle said (here was far too much of a pessimistic feeling abroad at the present lime. In a young country like New Zealand they should look on the optimistic side of things. Even if fanners were getting a lower price for produce they should not forget the good figures got during the war period, and it was only necessary to produce more to make up Hie difference now. They had to pay higher interest for money now, but that was not really .-•ucb a serious matter, seeing that the loans were raised in New Zealand amt the merest remained in Hie euiinlry. Then 1 was too much “warning people" going on at the present time. He quite believed in exercising economy, but even economy could be carried too far. “New Zealand.” said Mr Buttle, “is going to be a great country." Those like him who wore New Zealanders had full faith in the future of (heir native hind. Mr H. M. Shepherd said he. had passed through various periods of doleful times in New Zen-) land, and could assure them the present were the most prosperous doleful times ho bad ever seen in Auckland. (Applause.) New Zealand was really only beginning yet. Eighty years ago Auckland was composed of a few raupo whares. Look at it to-day, with its population for the whole district of nearly 200,000, and try and conceive what it would he like in another 80 years. “Let us,” added Mr Shepherd, “not be pessimistic, but all unite in the endeavour to build up this beautiful country/’
