PRIZE-GIVING 'CEREMONY,

The prize-giving ceremony in connection with the local State School was continued in the Town Hall on Thursday afternoon, in the presence of a large gathering. The Chairman of Committee congratulated the staff upon the excellent results of the year’s.work. A standard of efficiency had been set which was second to none in any primary school under the Board’s jurisdiction. He paid a tribute to the excellent work of ex-pupils at the Palmerston High School. He congratulated the prizewinners in the various classes, and said that all who laid conscientiously worked during the year were prize-winners, even though they did not carry away a prize. He urged parents to see that their children attended regularly and punctually, and stressed the necessity for a full course, even though it meant selfdenial on their,part. He congratulated the parents upon their line new school, in which the scholars were now settled, and asked that they continue to take an interest in its equipment and environment. He concluded by a reference to charac-ter-building. Mr Fame, head master, thanked (ho Chairman for his references to the staff and school work during the year. During his absence, owing to illness, the work had been carried on faithfully by his assistant, Mr Gahites. During his 25 years service as a teacher he had not been associated with a more efficient staff of teachers. He paid a "tribute to the good behaviour of the children, and thanked parents, Committee and staff for their hearty co-opera-tion.

Cheers were lustily given for the staff, scholars, and Committee, and a vote of -thanks was accorded to Mr Reid for placing the hall at the disposal of the school for the ceremonies.

The Chairman extended the Compliments of the Season to the scholars ancTstaff, and hoped -they would all come back after well-spent holidays with renewed vigour’, to maintain the splendid reputation achieved. The Nationa] Anthem concluded a very enjoyable ceremony.
