The attendances at the local Show oh Thursday and Friday was a record. The public interest evinced in the Show is very encouraging to to the Society.

A meeting was held al Rongotea. this week to consider the creel ion of a soldiers’ monument. Mr R. A. Callender presided over a gathering of twenty settlers, 'll was decided to honour the districts' soldiers who fell ia the war by placing a monument in Douglas Square, and to raise £50(1 for the purpose. As showing how the revenue of the Westport Harbour Board Ims suffered through difficulties in (he coal mining industry, if is interesting to mention that before the war (he Board’s revenue was £1)4,000 annually, ami now it was reduced to £37,000. The Board’s annual interest charges totalled £IO.OOO per annum.

The Imperial requisition, said the Premier al Palmerston on Wednesday, had brought £15(1,000,000 into the country, and they had thus been able lo pay their war expenses as far as they had been asked to. For various reasons, imports this (inaneial year had so far exceeded exports, and money had tightened, but there was still plenty in the country. They-were now on the turn, and the now season’s-pro-ducts had just been sent away, and Du* first shipment of “free’ meat would he at the end of the year. The price of wool was a question that was of vital effect ia Du* whole eoinmuitily. This year there would he a difference of .C(>,000.0()() against them, as compared with last year. That was a serious• matter, but they hoped partly to make up that deficit on their dairy products, which were calculated to show an increase of £3,000,000.
