Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1920. HARBOUR BOARD AND RAILWAY DEVIATION.
OWING to an oversight, the Foxion Harbour Board was not asked to be represented at the various conferences (if .local body delegates lo discuss (he Levia-Marton deviation. This is a mntier for regret when it is remembered that (lie late Chairman of the Board, Mr P. ■). Hennessy —than whom there was no stronger advocate of I lie connecting link —was the Chairman of the lirst conference of local body delegates, held in 1908, to revive the agitation for this national work. He tit all times expressed the view (hat the interests of .(ho port and tho railway conned inn were inseparable, and had he been with ns yesterday ho wdnhl have expressed those views with no uncertain voice to the Prime Minister and Minister for Public Works. Further, had he been present at the Board yieeling, there would ■ have been no halfmeasures in his advocacy. The Board, however, did not commit itself for or against the scheme by resolution,, although- the discussion on.the part of (hose who expressed an opinion was antagonistic, and the best offered by the local representative was a compromise in the nature of extending the ftandon tram to the Alain line and a further light railway from Foxion to Levin. While it is a matter for regret Unit the Board was not included officially in the present agitation, two of its members, Messrs Malheson and Barber were present, and took part at, the Sandon Conference, but were unavoidably absent at the last Board meeting.
