PALMERSTON AND MANAWATU.
Mr J. Kebbell, of Naunnii, Levin, writes as follows to the Horowhenua Chronicle: — “i. was pleased to see in your issue of this evening Unit the .Foxl on Herald was opposing the proposed change of name from Palmerston North to Manuwatu, the name of a large district, and I hope it will not eventuate. Some years ago an Act: was passed providing that inhere tjiere wore two towns of I lie same name I lie youngest was to take another. Kongotea ceased to be Camphelllown; but Palmerston would not. change, the residents being so much in love with it, and the then Government was too weak to enforce the law, but North was added. I wonder what lias brought about the change, though I think they must have been hankering aiiout it for some time, as I was once spoken to about it by an old resident and asked if 1 would agree to (he change. My reply was decidedly “No.” However, 1 suggested to him a Maori name, easily spelt and pronounced, “ilangiianc,” the name of the tribe who sold the land to the Government, and, therefore, in my opinion, very suitable, I was camped at Hokowhitu clearing at the time of the sale, and could not get on to liaukawa, where the meeting held, on account of a very hea.njT Hood. Horowhenua is often mentioned as being in the Manawatu district, and was originally a pari of the Manawatu county, so that Levin is somewhat interested in the proposed change.”
