WHAT’S WRONG WITH PALMERSTON?
Palmerston North has nourished exceedingly under its present name, whieh was bestowed upon it in honour of one of the greatest of British statesmen. It is not satisfied with its name, because a nondescript township hundreds of miles away carries a similar title. It also wants to bring under its wing the whole of the surrounding country of Manawatn, and to call itself “Manawa!n City.” Master!on, by the same token, might designate itself “Aairarapa.” Hastings might fight with Napier for the same of “Hawke’s Bay.” Christchurch may clamour of “Canterbury." Dunedin has everv right to demand the name of TOlflgo City.” \Then a town, like ;,n individual, becomes tired of its name, people are inclined to suspect that there is something wrong. What is wrong with Palmerston North? Is it suffering from the dumps, or what? —Wairarapa Age.
