NEWS IN BRIEF.

A. pathetic tragedy of' brotherly love is reported from Bregenz, on Lake Constance. An Austrian officer, Captain Si rugger, aged 28, who was twice decorated for bravery in he war, shot and killed his sister, igcd 21, who severely injured her spine a year ago in an Alpine accilloiil. She has suffered terribly evey dnee, and has been confined to her bed. She had hogged a doctor to put her out of her pain by killing bar with morphine, but the doctor refused. Captain, Slrngger delivered an ultimatum to the doctor, hut as he again refused, St rugger, with Ihe full consent of his sister, shot her. He has been arrested on a charge of murder. The bituminous coal coiisumpiion in the United Slates for the present coal year, which will end on March 31st, 1921, will not likely exceed 550,000,000 tons, and may be no more than 500,000,000 tons. This means that the mines must produce a little better than 10,000,000 tons a week in order to supply the demand. The report of the Medical School Officer for London for 1919 is cheering reading, for it reports the lowest death-rate among children ever recorded. Dining the year more than 300,000 children were medically inspected, and 109,200 received medical treatment. The general condition of the children, as regards nutrition and cleanliness, was distinctly better than in the year before the Avar. A belfry usually contains from six to twelve bells —though twelve is an uncommon number, the usual being eight. These bells vary in note from the tenor*, Avhieh is the heaviest, doivn to the treble, the lightest. They are rung in changes. That is to say that the tenor always comes first, and after that the other hells follow in various orders. A peal consists of at least live thousand changes, all different, so that the bell-ringer has to concentrate a great deal, or he will spoil the peal.
