Savs the Manawatu Standard;— “If is rather remarkable, on reviewing the subject of floods, how far one delves into history tor the genesis of.the proposals for an effective overflow scheme by which the Hood waters of our rivers, and of (lie Manawatn in particular, would find a safe and direct outlet. Some 10 real's ago a commission was set up to go into the question. Recommendations were made, and there the matter ended. Since then various proposals have been mooted, but none adopted as a Government scheme. One suggestion was to divert the channel of the Manawatu across the Makerua Swamp, flow much this would have benefited the eountry is prohlemalleal. Another proposal was to cut off the river at Walden's Bend, and lake it in a comparatively straight line to a point, above Foxlon, thus draining through the Moutoa area. The carrying out of this latter scheme would still leave the higher readies of the river a potential .source of danger. The same applies in little less degree to the other streams draining the Manawatu.”
